Materials writers’ miscellany workshop in Sendai

This weekend I had the great privilege to go to Sendai and represent the Materials Writers SIG and give a workshop for teachers. I gave two presentations the first, Elements of Visual Design for Language Learners, was a summary of theories about typography, page layout and graphics and how they effect language learners. In the course of the workshop, I presented a number of best practices for each category. The handout for the presentation can be downloaded HERE and the references for the presentation can be downloaded HERE.

The second presentation that I gave was Japanese Copyright Law and Authentic Materials: What Teachers Need To Know. In this presentation I introduced two sections of the copyright law in Japan that I felt are relevant to teachers and language learners. In the presentation I mentioned the Copyright Research and Information Center (CRIC). Their website can be found HERE. Also, a .pdf file of the official English language version of the Japanese copyright law can be downloaded HERE.

Cameron, it was a great pleasure to meet you, and I thank you for your excellent pair of presentations. I was really not sure that I would get much out of these, but in the end I walked away with a ton of useful information that I have already put to use. (By the way, I am forced to use the default typeset to create this post! Hmmm…)
I encourage anyone involved in teaching to take the opportunity to learn from these very informative presentations, and this very dynamic and engaging presenter.

Thanks Cory! I had a great time and I would love to come back again. Sendai is a great town and a great JALT chapter.
